PAYING FOR SURGERY Insurance Coverage for weight loss surgery varies greatly by insurance plans. Historically, some insurance companies do not cover the procedures, but there is a heavy movement for reform in this area. Insurance companies that do cover weight loss surgery typically require your physician to declare the procedure “medically necessary.” To obtain authorization, your physician will probably need to provide a Letter of Medical Necessity that indicates your BMI, associated medical problems and number of years overweight as well as a history of your weight loss programs and weight lost. If coverage is initially denied, you may be able to appeal by providing additional medical documentation. Financing If your procedure is not covered by your insurance policy, there are several companies that offer financing options for elective medical procedures.
